In-House Training
We had our first lot of in-house training last Tuesday. Our trainer Carole done a fantastic job of organising and created the training session on Personal Care and Catheter Care. We had 24 of our staff attend in 3 sessions over the course of the day.
The sessions covered the importance and correct use of PPE, the different types of personal care we assist with, the equipment we use, the importance of dignity, respect and encouraging independence, assisting and promoting good oral hygiene, best techniques for shaving, the different types of catheters we deal with.
The sessions were very informative and relaxed. Staff were able to discuss their own experiences of working out in the community and address some of the difficulties they had come across, especially dealing with catheters. Carole had sourced various types of day bags and night bags for the catheters so staff were able to practice on how to change and empty the bags.
The staff all had a turn at shaving each other (guards on razors) to see how it would feel for the person receiving the care and to practice their own techniques and share advice on what works best for their service users. Having someone shave my face was certainly an interesting experience!
The feedback from the training sessions was very positive. Carole received comments such as "It was relevant, interesting and fun" "I really enjoyed it" "I liked that it was interactive rather than just being bombarded with information" "I thought it was well organised and informative".
Carole has plans for many more different types of In-House training and is currently working on creating sessions for Palliative Care and End Of Life Care. This session will include a part on Grief and Loss as we recognise the importance of supporting not only our service users and their families but also our staff.
Our next scheduled training session will be provided by Ontex. They have kindly offered to come in to our office to provide training for our staff on the proper use of incontinence products.
